Shelter Nova Scotia said it's lacking personal care products for its clients this summer.

Summer brings its own challenges for those living on the street. The shelter is asking for people to drop off donations of deodorant and sunscreen to their 5506 Cunard St. location near Gottingen Street.

Spokesperson Colleen Ritchie said they are completely out of both products at a time when their clients need them.

"When you don't have a place to call your own or safe or affordable housing, medicines of any kind can be hard to come by and proactive types of care like sunscreen, preventative types of things are often lacking, for sure," she said.

"If we don't get enough donations in, then it means that we go out and we spend the money on that stuff, but we try not to do that because we have other things and needs that we have to use our money for for the clients. So if we can get these things donated, then it means that we can spend money on food, or programming, or different kind of things."

Ritchie said Shelter Nova Scotia can see as many as 140 people a night.

Outreach workers say one of the most important things for homeless people this time of year is staying hydrated.

Ritchie said drop offs can be made at their Cunard Street location between 9:30a.m. and 4:30 p.m. After 4:30 p.m., drop off is right next door. Ring the buzzer marked "office."
