Police identify Triston Reece as man shot and killed in west-end Halifax
Halifax Regional Police say they were called to Scot Street, Friday evening
A 19-year-old Halifax man who was shot in west-end Halifax Friday evening died of his wounds shortly after midnight, Halifax Regional Police say in a news release.
Police are considering Triston Reece's death a homicide.
Reece was a well-known football player in Halifax who competed on provincial teams and played at Citadel High in recent years.
In a news release early Saturday morning, police say they don't yet have any suspects.
Multiple police officers responded to the scene of a shooting in the 7100 block of Scot Street just before suppertime on Friday where they found a man with critical injuries.
Members of the force's forensic team could be seen taking pictures of the scene and inspecting a silver car. Investigators were also removing items from the vehicle.
A man named Austin, who would not give his last name to CBC News, said he heard two gunshots and a car screech off.
Some neighbours were surprised to hear there was a shooting in the area.
"I was really scared, even to walk by," said Fatuma Seid, who was walking with her friend and daughter later in the evening. "Am I safe really to walk with my child in this nice summer?"
Seid, who has lived in the neighbourhood for 15 years, said she's now questioning the safety of the area.
"Our safety is the No. 1 priority as citizens."
Anna Battilana, who owns a home salon next to the scene, said she didn't hear any gunshots when she was in her house.
"It's a very safe neighbourhood," said Battilana, who has lived in the area for 35 years. "This has never happened before."
Scot Street was closed to vehicles and foot traffic but has since reopened.
