Wagners seeks $6.6M in legal fees over N.S. Home for Colored Children case
Money would come from $29M settlement
The legal firm that won a $29 million settlement in the Nova Scotia Home for Colored Children case is asking a judge for $6.6 million in legal fees.
Wagners also seeks a further $500,000 in disbursement. The money must be approved by the court and would come from the $29 million settlement.
About 150 former residents of the orphanage allege they were sexually, physically and psychologically abused by staff over a 50-year period, to 1990.
Stephen McNeil’s Liberal government reached the deal with the residents, after previous governments fought the case.
Last year, the Nova Scotia Supreme Court approved a separate $5-million settlement between the Nova Scotia Home for Coloured Children and the home's former residents. That settlement was separate from this latest class-action suit.
