One of two men shot at a west end restaurant Sunday evening was a friend of both Awso Peshdary, charged in terrorism related offences, and Khadar Khalib, who went to Syria to fight for ISIS.

Ayyub Arab, 22, as well as Peshdary and Khalib, were all members of the Algonquin Muslim Students Association.

On Sunday evening, Arab and his cousin Marwan Arab, 20, were both shot inside the Shifa Restaurant at a strip mall at the corner of Iris Street and Cobden Road in Ottawa's west end.

Marwan Arab was shot in the head and died instantly.  Ayyub Arab was shot in the chest and is recovering in hospital.

The family of Ayyub Arab and Marwan Arab contacted CBC News on Tuesday, and said that the shooting has nothing to do with terrorism.

Police looking for suspects

Police say it was a targeted attack and they do not have any suspects in custody.

Police are refusing to say if they are investigating the connection between Ayyub Arab and Awso Peshdary.

The RCMP arrested Peshdary last year and charged him with numerous terrorism-related offences, including conspiracy to facilitate a terrorist act, knowingly participating in the activities of a terror group and counselling a person to knowingly participate in a terrorist activity.

Peshdary is prohibited from contacting 14 people while he awaits trial.  One of the names on the list is Ayyub Arab.

Khalib, who left Canada via Toronto's Pearson International Airport on March 29, 2014 and is believed to be fighting with ISIS, faces similar charges.
