Daniel Alfredsson named Ottawa Senators senior adviser of hockey operations
Alfredsson, 42, spent 13 years as the Senators' captain before retiring in Ottawa last December
The Ottawa Senators have named former captain Daniel Alfredsson a senior adviser of hockey operations.
Alfredsson, 42, will begin as an advisor to general manager Bryan Murray for the 2015-16 season and be involved in scouting and player development, according to a news release from the team.
"I am excited for our fans and our team that Daniel has agreed to begin the second part of his storied hockey career right where he belongs — with the Senators," team owner Eugene Melnyk said in a news release.
"Daniel has been an exceptional part of our team's history. He was a tremendous leader on the ice and equally in our community. I very much want him to continue to be part of our hockey club and our city ... I believe Daniel's experience and track record as one of the elite players in our league will bring us closer to that goal."
The native of Gothenburg, Sweden, spent 13 seasons as the captain of the Senators and retired the franchise's all-time leader in goals, assists, points, power-play goals, shorthanded goals, game-winning goals, shots and hat tricks.
Alfredsson will start his new job immediately as the Senators' training camp kicked off on Thursday.

"I want to thank Eugene and Bryan for giving me this tremendous opportunity," Alfredsson said in a news release.
"Retiring from the game but having this chance to remain part of the hockey world, especially in Ottawa, is very special ... I believe my experience as a player can help provide a boost to this group and allow us to keep the momentum from last year's exciting season."
The Senators play their first exhibition game on Monday at the Canadian Tire Centre against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
