A Great Dane that was emaciated and near death after being purchased online in January has nearly doubled in weight, according to the Ottawa Humane Society.

Charlie was a gaunt 53 lbs. — less than half of what a dog of his size should weigh — when his new owner surrendered him for emergency care, according to the OHS. The five-year-old Great Dane had been sold on Kijiji on Jan. 20.

His previous owner, Jason Woodruff, has been charged with permitting an animal to be in distress and failing to provide adequate food, water and medical attention. His next court appearance is April 16.

Since Charlie received medical care, he has gained 40 lbs., now weighing in at 93 lbs. The OHS said a dog of Charlie's size should weigh 120 lbs. He continues to recuperate with a foster family.
