One of the great Canadian comfort foods is featured on this week's edition of D is for Dinner on CBC Radio's All in a Day.

A recipe for heritage bannock, the yeast-free bread that can be served savoury or sweet, will be shared by caterer Anna Cote.

Cote is preparing bannock for ByTown Days this weekend, which celebrates the heritage of the Rideau Canal. She shared her recipe with us below.

Bannock

Ingredients

  • 3 cups flour.
  • 2 tsp baking powder.
  • 1 tsp sugar.
  • 1/2 tsp salt.
  • 1 1/2 to 2 cups water.

Directions

  1. Mix dry ingredients together, add water and mix.
  2. For the best fluffiest results, mix as little as possible. Just mix until the water comes together with the dry mix and it still looks fluffy.
  3. Oil your pan.
  4. Add mixture and bake in the oven for one hour at 375 F or until golden brown all around.
