Ian Bush charged in home invasion of Ottawa war veteran

Ian Bush, 59, has been charged with attempted murder after a 101-year-old war veteran was robbed and left bound with a plastic bag over his head.

Bush appeared in court on Saturday to face several charges:

• Attempted murder.
• Robbery with violence.
• Forcible confinement.
• Break and enter.
• Use a credit card obtained by crime (two counts).

Ernest Côté, a veteran of the Second World War, was alone in his apartment at 31 Durham Pvt. when a man claiming to be a City of Ottawa employee asked to be buzzed into the building around 7:30 a.m. ET on Thursday.

Once in the building, the man forced himself into Côté's apartment and demanded money.

Côté was robbed and left tied up with a plastic bag over his head. He managed to free himself after the man left and called 911. He was not injured.

Ottawa police released photos and a surveillance video after the home invasion. A tip led to the arrest of a suspect on Friday, police said.

Lucie Côté told CBC News on Saturday that her dad is "madder than a wasp" about the home invasion. But while he is happy there has been an arrest, she said, he wants to underline that Bush is a suspect who has not been convicted.

​She said the family has been inundated with offers of money, but Côté requests that donations be made to charity or veterans' groups.  

Bush works from home and is married with children and a grandson, neighbours told CBC News. A LinkedIn profile with his name and photograph says he works in management consulting.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper tweeted about the arrest.
