Ottawa police arrested and charged a man this weekend for causing a disturbance involving a replica firearm at CHEO, the city's children's hospital, the force confirmed on Monday.

According to police news releases, a man in his 30s caused a disturbance at the hospital shortly before 5 p.m. on Saturday and did so "with the child they were accompanying in the care of another guardian."

He was asked to leave and escorted to the parking lot, where he allegedly confronted CHEO security staff with what was later found to be a replica firearm, according to police. He fled but was later found a short distance away.

No one was injured.

The man is charged with three counts of harassment by threatening conduct, plus carrying a concealed weapon and possessing a weapon dangerous to public space, among other charges.

Police are not releasing his name in order to protect the child's identity and the investigation is ongoing.

Hospital declared 'code silver'

In an emailed statement, CHEO said it declared a "code silver" over the incident, a code used by other hospitals during incidents involving guns or gun violence

"A lockdown was immediately initiated to ensure the safety of all patients, staff, and visitors," according to CHEO's statement.

"The situation was contained quickly and we commend our staff for their professional and calm response during this disturbing incident."
