Nelliya Karbisheva, 82, was last seen around the Horseshoe Crescent area in Stittsville at about noon Sunday.

Her first language is Russian, she speaks limited English, and she suffers from "some degree of dementia," according to Ottawa police Insp. Glenn Wasson.

A police command post is set up at the northern end of Stittsville Main Street, near a wooded area Karbisheva often walks in. Police have been searching the woods on foot with the help of OPP drones, Wasson said.

At about 10:30 p.m. Sunday the missing woman may have been spotted at the Queensway-Carleton Hospital, about a two-and-a-half-hour walk away from the Horseshoe Crescent area in Stittsville.

A man was "quite confident" he saw her there with her dog, Wasson said, but no surveillance video was recorded due to construction and the possible sighting has not been confirmed.

Police searched a 300-metre radius from the possible sighting, including backyards, then returned to Stittsville Main Street late Monday.

Check sheds, yards

People living in the area are asked to check their sheds, yards, or anywhere else the woman may have gone for shelter in the rain.

Karbisheva is described as a white woman, about five feet two inches tall, with a medium build.

She has short salt and pepper hair, and was last seen wearing brown shorts, a rose or pink hat and a blue jacket.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Ottawa police missing persons unit at 613-236-1222, ext. 3726, or the west district patrol staff sergeant at 613-236-1222, ext. 2912.
