The Ottawa Senators have stopped a motion to post Sens Mile signs until playoff spot is clinched.

The city won't be putting up any Sens Mile decorations before the team wins a playoff spot, following a letter sent by the team's president to Mayor Jim Watson.

"We appreciate the enthusiasm and support that council has shown for the Senators with today's motion to open the Sens Mile early," wrote team president Cyril Leeder in a letter to Watson on Wednesday.

"However, we would respectfully request that we hold off on this until the team officially qualifies for a playoff spot. ... We feel strongly that the Sens Mile is a playoff tradition and would ask that council reconsider/defer today's motion until the appropriate time."

In a news release issued Thursday morning, the city said it's accepted the team's request.

The Senators have been making a strong late-season push for the final wildcard playoff spot.

They play the New York Rangers tonight at the Canadian Tire Centre.
