Police officer drives ambulance to hospital while paramedics care for new mom

A woman and her new baby are doing well after the mother gave birth on the side of a local highway Thursday afternoon.

Just before 4:30 p.m. Thursday, paramedics were forced to pull over on the Blackburn Hamlet Bypass when the woman they were taking to hospital started going into labour.

The woman delivered a healthy baby girl, nine weeks early, weighing nearly a kilogram and a half, paramedics said.

As the paramedics provided care to the woman, an Ottawa Police Service officer hopped into the ambulance and drove it to the hospital.

Coincidentally, one of the paramedics who helped with the delivery was 24 weeks pregnant herself.
