Pilot rescues mother, puppies from northern Ontario reserve

A two-year-old mother, a Lab-Doberman mix, and her two three-week-old puppies face “freezing to death” or starvation if people don’t step in to help, according to a member of a dog rescue group in Ottawa.

The tale has a happy ending, however, thanks to two groups that helped rescue the dogs from the Sandy Lake First Nation reserve in northern Ontario and found them a foster home.

There is no veterinarian and a large population of stray dogs at the reserve, according to Kim Knapp, a member of Friendly Giants Dog Rescue.

"The pups would face freezing to death," said Knapp, "Mom would face starving to death, unless people were to help out."

That’s when the charity group, Pilots N Paws Canada steps in, while Friendly Giants helps to find the dogs a happy home.
