Place des Peuples new design unveiled for Gatineau hotel, condo towers

A new design by architect Douglas Cardinal was unveiled Thursday for two mixed-use hotel and condominium towers in downtown Gatineau, Que., called Place des Peuples.

Official plan not yet submitted to City of Gatineau

A new design by architect Douglas Cardinal was unveiled Thursday for two mixed-use hotel and condominium towers in downtown Gatineau, Que., called Place des Peuples.

The 35- and 55-floor towers would sit on Rue Laurier directly across from the Canadian Museum of History — designed by Cardinal in the 1980s — and would include an underground link to the museum.

The towers themselves would be linked by several floors of space designed to look similar to the curvy museum.

The $400-million plan, which has not yet been formally presented to the city for approval, would include about 125,000 square feet of space, 65,000 more square feet than the original design.

Brigil, the developers behind the project, modified their plans after the community provided feedback following the initial design. They hope to attract about one million visitors per year to an observation centre on top of one of the towers.

The project would create 1,000 jobs and generate about $8 million in property taxes each year, Brigil said.

An official plan will be presented to the City of Gatineau in January.
