Rideau Canal gets $39M infrastructure boost
The federal government is giving the Rideau Canal $39.4 million for a long list of infrastructure projects, including rehabilitation to bridges, dams and locks.
Bridges, dams and locks from Ottawa to Kingston to get facelift
The federal government announced $39.4 million for a long list of Rideau Canal infrastructure projects, including the rehabilitation of bridges, dams and locks.
It builds on the recent announcement of $6.6 million, bringing the total for the historic site to $46 million.
The funding has been allocated to various projects from Ottawa to Kingston:
- $7.6 million to repair and replace concrete walls between the Ottawa Locks and Dow's Lake.
- $1.1 million to restore concrete of Hog's Back dam and weir.
- $3 million to re-pave and fix concrete on fixed bridge that traverses Hog's Back weir.
- $1.1 million to repair and improve the Black Rapids dam on the Rideau River in Ottawa.
- $2.6 million to rehabilitate the Burritts Rapids Earth Dam in the Municipality of North-Grenville.
- $1.2 million to rehabilitate the Edmonds weir, dam and Lock 25 in the Municipality of Merrickville-Wolford.
- $3.1 million to rehabilitate the Bobs Lake Dam in the community of Bolingbroke.
- $2.5 million to repair dams from Ottawa to Kingston. There are more than 200.
- $4.5 million for masonry repairs to locks from Ottawa to Kingston. There are 47.
- $2.1 million to rehabilitate the Upper Brewers Earth Dam in Kingston.
- $2.3 million to replace the fixed bridge at Kingston Mills, the first lockstation at the south end of the canal in Kingston.
- $2.2 million to repair, repaint and re-pave the Kingston Mills Swing Bridge.
- $1.6 million to rehabilitate the Jones Falls Timber Bridge, built in 1883, in the Township of Rideau Lakes.
- $650,000 to repair or replace the concrete bridge between Jones Falls Locks and the stone arch dam in the Township of Rideau Lakes.
- $850,000 to rehabilitate the Upper Nicholsons Earth Dam the Municipality of Merrickville-Wolford.
- $775,000 to repaint and repave the Merrickville Swing Bridge — work which was completed this spring.
- $800,000 for masonry repairs to the Narrows Lock 35 in the community of Portland.
- $750,000 to replace Chaffeys Swing Bridge over Indian Lake on the Rideau Canal — work which was completed this spring.
- $5.3 million to rehabilitate the Poonamailie Dam in the Township of Rideau Lakes. ($4.3 million for this project was previously announced.)
- $2.3 million (previously announced) to repair and improve Black Rapids Lock 13 in Ottawa.
