Royal visit means multiple road closures Monday, Tuesday

King Charles and Queen Camilla's visit to Ottawa will mean some major road closures in the city Monday and Tuesday. Here's a list to help you get around town.

King Charles and Queen Camilla's visit to Ottawa will mean some major road closures in the city Monday and Tuesday.

The King and Queen are due to touch down at the Ottawa International Airport around 1:15 p.m. before heading to Lansdowne Park. They will then head to Rideau Hall where they're due to arrive around 2:50 p.m. to take part in a ceremonial tree planting.

The closures will continue Tuesday as Charles is due to deliver the speech from the throne in the Senate to open the 45th session of Parliament. That's expected to take place around 11 a.m.

The City of Ottawa said it's working closely with Ottawa police, RCMP and other security partners to ensure the royal couple's safety.

The road closures will be temporary, but some could last several hours. The closures will also affect OC Transpo and Para Transpo service.

Motorist, cyclists and even pedestrians are being warned to expect disruptions, and residents are advised to avoid unnecessary travel near the downtown.

For security reasons, the city said it may wait to release more precise times for some road closures.

Monday: Arrival, Lansdowne Park, Rideau Hall

The Airport Parkway will be closed from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Monday. Traffic on Bronson Avenue will resume north of Colonel By Drive. The stretch of Hunt Club Road between Riverside Drive and the Airport Parkway will also be closed.

Colonel By will be closed from Bronson to Rideau Street. On the opposite side of the Rideau Canal, Queen Elizabeth Driveway will be closed between Bronson and the entrance to Lansdowne Park at Princess Patricia Way. In the Glebe, Findlay Avenue, Torrington Place and Princess Patricia Way will be closed.

As the King and Queen make their way to Rideau Hall, Elgin Street will be closed between Wellington Street and Laurier Avenue W.

Sussex Drive will be closed all the way from Rideau Street to Rideau Gate, at the entrance to Rideau Hall.

Tuesday: Speech from the throne

Rideau Street will be closed from Dalhousie Street to Sussex Drive from 5 a.m. to 1 p.m. In front of Parliament Hill, Wellington Street will be closed to Lyon Street.

Lyon, Kent, Bank, O'Connor and Metcalfe streets will be closed between Wellington and Queen streets, while Elgin Street will be closed as far as Laurier Avenue W.

Sussex Drive and Mackenzie Avenue will be closed between the Alexandra Bridge and the Senate of Canada Building where Charles will deliver the speech from the throne around 11 a.m.

A short stretch of Colonel By Drive between Rideau and Daly Avenue will also be closed Tuesday.
