Sound of Music musical breaks records at National Arts Centre
Most popular show in NAC history a tough ticket to get
Ticket sale figures have been sweet music to the ears of the National Arts Centre, as its latest musical breaks records and sells out theatres.
The Sound of Music’s run at the NAC has been extended three times but remains historically popular, according to spokesperson Sean Fitzpatrick.
“This show has been extremely popular, more popular than any other show we've had,” he said.
“It's set a new record for ticket sales, we announced 24,800 tickets have been sold for this production and it's continuing to sell.”
That breaks the record of 22,743 tickets sold for the old record-holder for programmed performances at the NAC, The National Ballet of Canada's The Nutcracker in 2001.
Tickets scarce, especially for groups
The downside to this demand is people looking for tickets are often out of luck.
“Our son came home from England, we weren't sure he was going to make it, but he did and we have not been able to get him a ticket,” said Erin Simmons.
“We gave up at midnight last night, so he's not with us.”
“We had four tickets in a section and we couldn't get them together, but we're sitting in front of each other, two and two,” said Laurie Michael.
One of the show’s actors said she’s not surprised by all the sell-outs.
“Even though it's not about Christmas, the values and the themes are so applicable to the season that it's the perfect recipe for a success,” said Leah Doz, who plays Liesl von Trapp.
The Sound of Music’s NAC run began on Dec. 3 and ends Jan. 4.
