The Ottawa 67's have traded their captain Travis Konecny, a member of Team Canada at the recent World Junior Hockey Championships, to the Sarnia Sting in a blockbuster deal involving four players and a litany of draft picks.

Ottawa also sent forward Sam Studnicka to Sarnia in exchange for forwards Sasha Chmelevski and Chase Campbell plus eight draft picks and two more conditional draft picks that hinge on whether Konecny plays in the Ontario Hockey League next season.

Konecny, 18, was a first-round pick of the Philadelphia Flyers, 24th overall, in last summer's NHL draft.

In his third season with the 67's, Konecny was second in team scoring with nine goals and 45 points. He tallied 62 goals and 121 assists in 152 games with Ottawa after being selected first overall in the 2013 OHL draft.

Studnicka, 20, is an over-age player in his fifth OHL season, second with Ottawa.

In exchange, the 67's receive Chmelevski, a 16-year old rookie born in Northville, Mich., who was chosen in the first round of the most recent OHL draft, 10th overall.

He has nine goals and eight assists in 29 games with Sarnia and participated at the 2015 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge tournament in November.

Campbell, 17, was Sarnia's third-round pick, 55th overall, in the 2014 draft, but has played only 16 games this year and scored a pair of goals. Standing five feet eight inches tall, Campbell has played more of a checking role with the Sting.

The draft picks acquired by the 67's are as follows:

  • Second round in 2016, 2017, 2019.
  • Third round in 2017, 2019, 2020.
  • Fifth round in 2017, 2019.
  • Conditional second-round picks in 2021, 2022.

Chmelevski and Campbell should play their first game with Ottawa on Friday when the 67's host the Peterborough Petes, according to the team website.
