Wolfe Islander IV set to resume ferrying residents Tuesday

The electric ferry was damaged last December when it's believed to have struck bottom. After undergoing repairs, it's expected to make its first run in months at 5 a.m. Tuesday.

After months of repairs, the Wolfe Islander IV is expected to resume ferrying passengers to and from Kingston, Ont., on Tuesday morning.

The electric ferry was damaged on Dec. 4 when it's believed to have struck bottom. That caused damage to its propellers, tore a 30-centimetre gash in its hull and caused it to take on water.

It was then towed away to Hamilton for repairs before returning to the local waters several weeks ago.

According to Ontario's Ministry of Transportation, the Wolfe Islander IV will depart on its first run in months from the Marysville dock on the island at 5 a.m. Tuesday.

It will operate on an 80-minute round trip schedule between Wolfe Island and Kingston, the ministry said.

The Wolfe Islander IV is one of a pair of electric ferries the province bought for roughly $94 million. It was supposed to have entered service in 2021 but only began transporting passengers last August.

The older Wolfe Islander III has been operating during its absence.
