More than $100,000 in social-assistance writeoffs have been approved by the P.E.I. government.

The writeoffs stem from overpayments to some clients who were not able to pay back the money or that were unrecoverable by the government.

"Those overpayments could come from unreported income, changes in living arrangements, someone who becomes in a relationship and there's two people now with income in the home. Those would be specific areas where we could have an overpayment," said Rhea Jenkins, director of social programs for the province.

"We have a significant number of clients who overpayment recovery is a very straightforward process that happens. But there is another group of individuals who don't have the means or any prospects of ever paying back those dollars. They are written off."

The writeoffs total $103,000.

There are also $33,000 in writeoffs for child-care subsidies.
