The P.E.I. Liquor Control Commission is trying out longer hours at the liquor store in Alberton.

Mayor Mike Murphy asked in the spring for the store to be open Sundays and evenings, like the stores in the nearby communities of O'Leary and Tignish.

"It's better for the merchants and the people in the tourist sector that they have it open in town. It draws the people back in," said Murphy.

"This way they can do their grocery shopping or whatever and get their booze as well."

Murphy said the extended hours started two weeks ago. The store is now open until 10 p.m. Monday to Saturday, and noon to 5 p.m. on Sundays.

The extended hours will be reviewed in the fall, said Murphy, to see if the business is there to sustain it.
