Aretha Franklin, Anne of Green Gables fan, invited to P.E.I.
P.E.I. Premier Robert Ghiz has extended a personal invitation to Aretha Franklin upon learning that she is a fan of Anne of Green Gables.
The 1908 book by L. M. Montgomery is popular around the world, and one of the pillars of the Island's tourism industry.
The woman known as the Queen of Soul is not immune to its charms. In a recent interview, Franklin asked a reporter with the Toronto Star where she could find P.E.I., saying she's "crazy" about Anne of Green Gables and would love to visit.
Ghiz sent her a tweet inviting her to come on up.
"You never know really how popular you are until you hear superstars like that talking about it," he said.
'@ArethaFranklin come visit PEI anytime. We would love to welcome in the land of "Anne" #respect'- @RobertGhiz
"I think it's a great opportunity for P.E.I. to capitalize on the popularity. Obviously Aretha Franklin, she's one of the most renowned music artists in the world, so it can't hurt us by her liking Anne of Green Gables."
The Confederation Centre says it plans to offer her tickets to see Anne of Green Gables: The Musical.
Tourism PEI said it's looking for the best way to try to reach out to Franklin. She is not particularly active on Twitter, with just 41 tweets and none this year.
