Canadians gather for Charlottetown celebration
Charlotte Town travels to Charlottetown for Canada Day
Canadians from coast to coast to coast were in Charlottetown Tuesday for a special Canada Day as the city marks the 150th anniversary of the Charlottetown Conference.
The 1864 meeting was the beginning of talks that led to the creation of Canada. It wasn't difficult to find people who had travelled long distances — from Nova Scotia, British Columbia and the Northwest Territories — to celebrate Canada Day in the cradle of Confederation.
But the most travelled visitor was perhaps from New Zealand. Her name is Charlotte Town.
"It's just great. In fact it's a thrill, it really is, to spend Canada Day coming to my heaven on earth," said Town.
Visitors enjoyed the free entertainment in the Celebration Zone, a concert at the Charlottetown Event Ground, and what was billed as Canada's largest fireworks display over the harbour.
"P.E.I. is the buzz across the country and we're pretty proud and pretty excited about that," said Penny Walsh Mcguire, executive director of P.E.I. 2014.
P.E.I. 2014 celebrations continue through to New Year's Eve.
