Charlottetown's Victoria Row extends pedestrian season

Victoria Row in Charlottetown will be closed to traffic longer after Charlottetown's city council passed a motion Monday night that will see it operate as a pedestrian area from May 1 until the end of October every year.\
The block of Richmond Street between Great George and Queen streets is usually closed to traffic from June 1 until the end of September. The decision came after requests from several area businesses, who want to keep Victoria Row open as a pedestrian area longer to reflect the city's cruise ship season.

"It is such a beautiful spot with the restaurants, we have bands playing," said Coun. Greg Rivard.
"You know the street is all cobble-stoned. It just looks really nice. And a lot of cities have those, and they seem to be a popular destination.
"If we could extend our season to reflect the cruise ship season and have tourists enjoy it that much longer then it's a win-win."
The changes will take effect Wednesday.
The closure still allows access for emergency vehicles and for people with disabilities.
