Island Storm coach Joe Salerno breaks league record for most wins
Salerno credits staff, players, owners ... and his wife for reaching 102 wins
The Island Storm's head coach Joe Salerno knew it was only a matter of time before he broke a National Basketball League of Canada record for the most wins.
"Our head statistician kind of just let me know that I was close. I mean I had an idea. After last season, I think I only needed three or four wins this year."
And the team's six-point win over the Windsor Express last Friday night put Salerno over the top.
With 102 wins under his belt, he now has more than any other head coach in the league's history.
"It really isn't about me. It's about the staff. It's about the players, the ownership group," said Salerno. "It's about my wife, to be honest with you — the support that she's shown me over the last five seasons."
Rashad Whack, who has been playing for the Island Storm for two years, said his move to professional basketball would have been a lot harder without Salerno.
"Last year was like, it was new to me and I definitely faced a lot of adversity," he said. "But, you know, coach, he definitely, helped me, become the better player that I am today."
Salerno said he's excited about the new record but right now, winning is the only thing he wants to focus on.
The next home game is in Charlottetown next Thursday against the Moncton Miracles.
