Nichola Goddard, 1st Canadian female soldier killed in combat, died 10 years ago
Goddard was killed by a stray piece of shrapnel during a firefight in Afghanistan
It was 10 years ago Tuesday that Captain Nichola Goddard was killed in Afghanistan, becoming the first female Canadian soldier to die in combat.
Goddard is arguably the best known of the 158 Canadian soldiers who died in Afghanistan. In the decade since there have been many tributes to her, including a Canadian Coast Guard ship named after her, a lake in Saskatchewan, and a school in Alberta.
A foundation in her name has helped bring solar-powered light to Papua New Guinea.
Her father Tim Goddard, who now lives on P.E.I., has said she would not have liked being highlighted for being a woman, because breaking down gender stereotypes was important to her.
Goddard was also nominated to be the female face on the new 2018 bank note, but she doesn't qualify because she died after 1991.
