P.E.I. Premier's Tuna Cup goes to Norton family
Nortons brought in P.E.I.'s biggest tuna of 2015
The Norton family of Naufrage, in northeastern P.E.I., have added another honour to their 2015 tuna fishing season.
Captain Greg Norton and his son Chance are the winners of the 2015 Premier's Tuna Cup for the largest tuna landed on the Island last year.
The giant bluefin, caught on Sept. 24 off North Lake, weighed 1,166 pounds (529 kilograms).
It took them a total of two hours and 45 minutes to land the giant tuna.
A world record set
The Premier's Tuna Cup is the second award for the family's efforts on the water last year.
Captain Greg Norton's son Koen landed an impressive tuna of his own, an 848-pound (385-kg) monster, big enough to earn him a world record for tuna caught by someone 10 years or younger.
In a sit-down with Premier Wade MacLauchlan, the now 11-year-old Koen Norton said he's looking forward to getting back on the water for this year's lobster season, and to the day when he can have a boat of his own.
There were 528 tuna caught by the Island tuna fleet in 2015, with a landed value of more than $2.5 million.
