Parkview Seniors Centre getting new roof from City of Summerside
'In some places the ceiling is starting to come down,' says centre president
The Parkview Seniors Centre in Summerside will receive money from the city for some much needed roof repairs.
The city-owned centre needs about $70,000 in repairs for a leaking roof, old windows and insulation problems.
It has applied for federal funding, but won't know if it will receive that until 2016.
In the meantime, councillors have agreed the city will foot the bill for a roof repair.
"Outside exterior is badly in need of repairs, roof, the windows, siding," said Pat Bendell, the centre's president.
"If it starts to leak you put the buckets under but in some places the ceiling is starting to come down now. So, it's not going to get better, it's going to get worse and the longer you leave it, the more damage and the more money it's going to cost."
The city's technical services committee to determine whether Summerside will pay for a shingled roof at a cost of about $7,000 or a metal roof, which will run $15,000, but last longer.
