The public washrooms at Victoria Park in Charlottetown are closed until further notice due to significant damage and vandalism, says the city's parks and recreation department.

Staff reported Monday that toilets and urinals were smashed and graffiti was left in the men's and women's washrooms at some point over the weekend, said Christopher Drummond, assistant manager of Charlottetown's parks and recreation department.

"We were very shocked and disappointed that this would happen inside of the washrooms," Drummond said.

The department has opened a case file with Charlottetown Police Services and is reviewing footage from an E-Watch camera located in the area, he said.

"Vandalism is common all across the city, but this significant vandalism that's happened is not very common."

The washrooms, located in a winterized building near the Memorial Field baseball diamond, are the only restrooms accessible to the public in that area, Drummond said.

"It is a major hit to those users of the park that they do not have a washroom facility to go to right now," he said.

The city is in the process of assessing the damage and cleaning up and repairing the affected property.

There is no timeline yet for when the washrooms will re-open, but the city will notify the public with any updates.

The city is asking anyone with information to contact Charlottetown Police Services' non-emergency police number at 902-629-4172.
