P.E.I. cheesemaker Cows wins 5 Canadian awards

P.E.I.'s Cows Creamery racked up five medals at the Canadian Cheese Awards on April 14 in Montreal. Its Avonlea Clothbound Cheddar won the prize for "cheese of the year." The same cheese won top spot at the World Cheese Awards in England last November.

P.E.I.'s Cows Creamery racked up five medals at the Canadian Cheese Awards on April 14 in Montreal.

Its Avonlea Clothbound Cheddar won the prize for "cheese of the year." The same cheese won top spot at the World Cheese Awards in England last November.

Cows also won for best Atlantic Canada cheese and best smoked cheese at the Canadian awards.

There were some wins from other parts of the Maritimes, too.

"That Dutchman's Cheese Farm" in Upper Economy, N.S., won for best gouda and best blue cheese.

The competition accepts cheese used with several kinds of milk, including cow, goat, sheep and even water buffalo.
