There has been a major change at the top of the English Language School Board on P.E.I. as superintendent Cynthia Fleet is on an approved leave of absence.

Ricky Hood, the official trustee of the board, said Bob Andrews will assume the duties of acting superintendent until the board is integrated into the Department of Education. Andrews is also the director of school effectiveness.

"He will remain the acting superintendent until such time as the integration between the department and the English Language School Board is complete," said Hood.

"That process has been ongoing for a number of months.

"The situation clearly is that the job will not exist in a few months' time."

Hood would not provide details on the reason for the leave of absence.

In a statement, Department of Education officials thanked Fleet for her service to Island students.

The statement said government is in the process of integrating the functions of the English Language School Board into the Department of Education, Early Learning and Culture.

It said once the transition is complete, some of the responsibilities of the superintendent will be integrated into the new public schools branch of the department.
