P.E.I. community groups get funding help to promote the rights of girls and women

Seven Island community groups are getting some funding help from the province for efforts to promote the rights of girls and women.

"There are so many community groups seeking to help Island women with needs of all kinds," said Paula Biggar, the Minister Responsible for the Status of Women in a press release. "Whether addressing sexual violence, accessibility, or economic challenges, each of these groups helps make our province a better place for girls and women."

Grants totalling $70,000 this year are for Island organizations that work in the areas of providing services and programs, supporting projects that enhance awareness education and social action, and promote equality for women and girls through advocacy, according to the release.

This year's recipients are:

• Women's Network P.E.I., $16,600, for the project Sharing Leadership: engaging all ages in the Women's Movement in P.E.I.
• P.E.I Rape and Sexual Assault Centre, $7,000, for the project Supporting Survivors of Sexual Violence in P.E.I. 
•  Cooper Institute, $5,000, for the project Women on the Margins: Education and Policy Change for Migrant Women. 
• P.E.I. People First, $9,000, for the project Our Voices Count: Women with Intellectual Disabilities Speak up for Accessible Services. 
•  Community Legal Information Association, $12,200, for the project Family Law Matters. 
•  P.E.I. Business Women's Association, $9,200, for the project Building Capacity in Young Women in P.E.I. 
•  East Prince Women's Information Centre, $9,000, for the project Safe Girls.
