Gold Cup Parade returning to Charlottetown this August with musical theme
Well-known musician Lennie Gallant named parade marshal for P.E.I. summer tradition
Music will take centre stage in the streets of downtown Charlottetown this summer as the annual Gold Cup Parade returns with the theme "Let the Music Move You."
The parade's 63rd edition will take place on Friday, Aug. 15, at 10 a.m.
In a news release Thursday, organizers said this year's theme encourages participants to celebrate the power of music through float designs, live performances and energy.
Acclaimed Island singer-songwriter Lennie Gallant will serve as this year's parade marshal.
"We're thrilled to have Lennie Gallant leading the way," Ray Murphy, chair of the parade's organizing committee, was quoted as saying.
"He's an incredible ambassador for Prince Edward Island. We look forward to seeing how participants interpret the theme, and we know spectators are in for something truly special this August."
The parade traditionally draws thousands of spectators, who line the streets of downtown Charlottetown to see the floats and performers pass by. It is a popular part of Old Home Week, which runs from Aug. 8-16 and includes the prestigious Gold Cup & Saucer harness race at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino.
Returning to the parade is the Burlington Teen Tour Band, billed as Canada's oldest and largest youth marching band.
This year's event also coincides with National Acadian Day, and organizers say Islanders can expect a lively tintamarre — a traditional Acadian parade filled with noisemakers and improvised musical instruments — along with musical floats showcasing the Island's Acadian culture.
Applications to enter a float in the Gold Cup Parade will be accepted until Aug. 1.
