'Disgraceful' brawl to cap off under-18 game under review, says Hockey P.E.I.
North River versus Kensington devolved into series of fights Saturday night
Hockey P.E.I. says it's conducting a review of an incident on the ice during a recent provincial tournament game.
Saturday's under-18 game at the Eliyahu Wellness Centre in North Rustico between the North River Flames and the Kensington Vipers devolved into a series of fights late in the third period.
The melee was captured on video by spectators and posted to social media. The footage shows sticks and gloves scattered across the ice surface as referees try to break up several skirmishes.
"What took place on the ice was a disgraceful representation of our game and completely contrary to the values of good sportsmanship, respect, and safety that Hockey PEI upholds at every level of play," the organization said in a statement posted to its website.
"The reports from game officials, video footage, member history, and statements from those involved will also be examined by our Discipline and Ethics Committee. Indefinite suspensions are pending and additional discipline will be determined using both Hockey PEI and Hockey Canada suspension guidelines following this review."
The incidents took place with just minutes left in the game with the Flames up 4-0.
A game report posted to Hockey P.E.I.'s website shows a slew of penalties to players and coaches in the final five minutes of the game. Among the penalties are game misconducts, match penalties and gross misconducts.
Hockey P.E.I. said in the statement that it not be commenting on the incident further until the review is complete.
