Instagram takeover: Rachel Peters captures 'a lot of love' in her photos of P.E.I.
'I love my P.E.I. a lot. I'm an Islander through and through for sure'
CBC P.E.I. is featuring a local photographer on our Instagram page every Wednesday this summer. This week, we're showcasing the work of Rachel Peters.
If there's one word that can describe Rachel Peters' photography, it's "love."
"I like pictures that tell a good story or just capture a lot of love," she said.
"I am in love with love … I feel it's important to be involved in community and to take in and share the love that's around you."
'Film is just so dreamy'
Peters now makes her living as a photographer, a passion that started when she was about five years old and was given an old film camera by a family member.
She still uses film in much of her photography.
"Film is just so dreamy and just so soft and beautiful," she said.
"There's a huge difference in film and digital — it just looks more real."
A love for the Island
Peters is from North Rustico, P.E.I., and a love of P.E.I. features prominently in her photography.
"I love my P.E.I. a lot. I'm an Islander through and through for sure," she said.
One spot she loves is Cavendish Beach.
"You can go there and sit there for hours and just listen to that water hitting those rocks, and it just instantly makes you feel relief and calm and smelling in that salt water — it's beautiful."
Keeping it local
That love for the Island means Peters tries to support "everything local."
This photo showcases local P.E.I. products — lobster, potatoes, corn, oysters, clams, mussels and local beer.
'A wedding photographer by heart'
Peters calls herself a "wedding photographer by heart" — shooting people's big day is "absolutely my most favourite" part of her job.
"I love weddings because it's not really a set-up. The day is happening as it's happening and those moments are real and those moments need to be captured and saved forever," she said.
She loves this image because it shows "a couple in love on our beautiful island" taken on a beach down east, with crashing waves and red cliffs in the background.
Sunsets are 'second to none'
"The sunsets on Prince Edward Island are second to none. I feel that we could do a whole tourism campaign just on the sunsets alone," said Peters.
"Every single evening is a beautiful sunset and it's different every single time."
