The 36th annual Tignish Irish Moss Festival began this week and will finish on Sunday with fireworks, a parade and the crowning of Miss Irish Moss 2016.

The festival began Tuesday with the inaugural mother-daughter painting party, according to Chelsea Murphy, this year's festival coordinator.

Other events this week and weekend include the youth dance, farmer's market, fireworks on Friday for Canada Day, a community yard sale, youth talent show, musical entertainment and a Chase the Ace competition.

'A really fun weekend'

Murphy said coordinating the festival has been an experience.

"I never realized how much work went into [the festival] before," she said.

The former Miss Pancake Flipper fondly remembered her time as a participant in the event.

"Flip the pancake higher than the rest of the participants," she explained Wednesday on CBC Radio's Island Morning

"It was a really fun weekend. It was a weekend, I think, after graduation. So, it was kind of a last time to spend with your friends before you all parted ways."
