A 23-year-old Summerside man appeared in court Wednesday morning after being charged with theft under $5,000.

He appeared in provincial court after two TVs were stolen from a church on Central Street in Summerside on Sunday morning during the church's service.

The incident was reported to Summerside police Tuesday after staff noticed the televisions missing.

Police said they identified the man as a suspect after watching video surveillance captured at the church.

Police said he was located Tuesday afternoon and taken into custody.

The man was also charged with possessing stolen property in relation to a daytime break and enter into a Driscoll Street home on July 31, where rings were stolen when the residents were home, police said.

Police said the man was apprehended the same day as the theft, for trying to sell rings at a local jewellery store.

The man will remain custody and is scheduled to appear in court Aug. 19.
