Basil Stewart has been elected mayor of Summerside.

As the election is being administered by Elections P.E.I., you can find detailed results here.

Stewart was the mayor of Summerside for 29 years — from 1985-2014. He lost to Bill Martin in the last municipal election. Martin decided not to re-offer this time around.

Stewart and mayoral candidate Nancy Beth Guptill battled for the lead throughout the night. When results first began to roll in around 7:30 p.m., Guptill took an early, razor-thin lead of about 50-60 votes over Stewart which she held until about 8:30 p.m.

After then, and continuing until after 10 p.m., Stewart hauled in significant chunks of votes from six of Summerside's eight wards, outpacing Guptill and eventually winning the election with 2,392 votes to her 2,115.
