Planned teacher cuts too heavy, says union
President of P.E.I. Teachers’ Federation to ask province to reconsider
The president of the P.E.I. Teachers’ Federation is hoping to meet with government officials early next month to officially ask them to reconsider planned teacher cuts for the next school year.
The Department of Education says 32 teaching positions will be eliminated through attrition.
"There is a lot of identified needs and we are trying to meet requirements for our students. And to be able to do that we need the manpower to be able to help out every child in this province,” said Gilles Arsenault, president of the P.E.I. Teachers’ Federation.
“Class composition and many different needs of the system would require the extra human resources in our classrooms. So we are trying to make that plea to government to see if we can get those positions to be maintained for the next school year."
Arsenault said some initial discussions have taken place, and the federation plans to make a formal request and argue its position further.
