Project Lifesaver tracking aims to speed up search and rescue
Tracking bracelets helpful for people with dementia
Search and rescue teams on P.E.I. have new tracking technology to help find people who have a tendency to wander.
The Project Lifesaver wristband is a tiny, battery-operated wrist transmitter emitting an FM signal.
"We have some equipment at our base and we go out to the search site and it can pick up a signal from that bracelet within three kilometres," said Ken Hall, president of P.E.I. Ground Search and Rescue.
"That can narrow it down and can take us right to the individual. I figure probably 30 minutes after we get there, we can probably find the person."
Hall said there are currently three or four people on P.E.I. wearing the wristbands. He believes with the Island's aging population there will likely be more calls to find people wandering.
