Grade 8 students at Montague Intermediate have established a garden on their school's roof.

A new rooftop garden is starting to bloom at Montague Intermediate School.

Megan Morrison's Grade 8 homeroom class established the garden with help from a $1,000 grant from the P.E.I. Department of Agriculture.

The class is growing a variety of herbs and vegetables including tomatoes, peppers, carrots, radishes and lettuce.

Each student will take home one of the potted plants over the summer and, in the fall, home economics students will use the produce to make salsa and pizza.

Sense of accomplishment

Morrison says the students came up with the idea and are volunteering at lunch and after school to tend to the garden.

"It's just all that they've talked about for the last month. It's been exciting. We knew we couldn't plant the garden outside because it's too much of a heavy traffic area, so then our idea was to just store everything in pots and have it growing on the roof. It was sheltered, and lots of sun, and very protected," said Morrison.

"They're begging me to stay after school and come in on the weekends. They're so into it, just because it's something they've done on their own, something they built, and something they've been able to see it grow as well, so it's a huge sense of accomplishment."

The school is now considering building a greenhouse, says Morrison.
