Roseville beached minke whale attracting a lot of visitors
The whale will be disposed of Thursday
A dead, beached whale found by a man in Roseville on Tuesday is attracting a lot of visitors in western P.E.I.
Darryl Donahue says he came upon the dead whale yesterday morning while out on his ATV. He believes it washed ashore overnight Monday.
Getting to the beach is no easy feat. It's a 20-minute walk from the nearest road, but that didn't deter people.
"I never seen one before, figured I might not see one again, so I came to see it," said Nelson Pineau.
The 30-foot long whale has already started to decompose. A quick sniff of the area makes that clear.
"It's big, white and smelly," said Pineau.
According to a provincial environment officer, it's a male minke whale, identifiable by the distinct white fin on an otherwise black back.
On Thursday morning, a group from the Canadian Wildlife Health Centre, based at the Atlantic Veterinary College in Charlottetown, will arrive to study the whale. They intend to take measurement, and hope to find out how old the whale was and how it died.
The Department of Agriculture and Fisheries is responsible for disposing of the whale and that is scheduled to take place Thursday morning.
