One of the two campgrounds at the Prince Edward Island National Park won't be opening until July 13, this year. That's about a month later than usual.

Parks Canada officials said the late opening of the Stanhope Campground is due to major renovations that were delayed because of the severe winter weather.

The $1 million worth of improvements include upgrading campsites, construction of a new playground, and upgrades to the camper registration area, roads and washrooms.

The work was scheduled to be complete in time for the 2015 camping season. That usually starts in early June.

Parks Canada said even when the campground does open on July 13, visitors can expect that some campsites at Stanhope will be periodically unavailable for use during the operating season as renovations continue.

Campers are being encouraged to check the reservation service because sites will become available as work is completed.

Parks Canada said efforts will be made to minimize disruptions to campers.
