Grade 8 students at Kensington Intermediate School have donated the cash value of their runner-up prize in a national Parks Canada contest to help victims of the Fort McMurray wildfire.

The students were to receive the prize for the video they created and submitted to the national Canada's Coolest School Trip Contest. The video highlighted the conservation efforts and fun activities people can take part in when they visit Prince Edward Island National Park.

The video was one of 69 made and posted and voted for online to determine the top 10. Parks Canada staff then selected the winners.

Rather than enjoy an overnight camping trip at Cavendish campground in P.E.I. National Park and a private sensational sandcastles program with local sand sculptor, Maurice Bernard, the students decided to donate the prize's value of $750 to the Red Cross.

The students received certificates of recognition Friday from Parks Canada team members and its mascot, Parka the Beaver.
