New bike lane on Trans Canada Highway connects cyclists and pedestrians to Charlottetown
New bike lane from Poplar Island through to Charlottetown on the TCH aims to protect cyclists
A new lane on the Trans Canada Highway is connecting cyclists and pedestrians from Cornwall to Charlottetown.
The lane begins at the new May Point roundabout and proceeds along the North River Causeway Bridge. The lane ties in Capital Drive and Upton Road as well.
Travellers heading from Cornwall to Charlottetown will see the new path on the right hand side.

The new path is four lanes wide with a splitter island that has a six inch curb in the centre and a six inch curb on the outside edge in both directions said chief engineer for the P.E.I. Department of Transportation, Stephen Yeo.
Demands for active transportation
The path itself is an eight-foot-wide paved area for cyclists and pedestrians to share.
Yeo said the new path aims to provide an avenue for cyclists and pedestrians to walk outside the traffic corridor.
"We hear it all the time. A request for more active transportation venues and this is just something we've provided as part of this project," said Yeo.
Yeo said active transportation venues are in high demand from the Charlottetown, Stratford and Cornwall communities.
More paved lanes to come
Yeo also said that there are more lanes to come next year.
"We're looking in other areas where we've put paved shoulders on existing cross sections that didn't have it before."
Yeo said that Islanders can expect a paved bike and pedestrian lane on Route 6 between Kensington and Stanley Bridge to be completed as well.
