Friday is the deadline for public feedback on the first stage of development of a new Water Act. The government has been collecting comments from Islanders since July.

Minister of Communities, Land and Environment, Robert Mitchell says the response has been great, with about 60 presentations at public consultations and face-to-face meetings, and another 60 or more submissions via email, fax and letters.

"We're extremely pleased about the interest from Islanders in regards to how they want to see water protected for both quantity and quality on Prince Edward Island for many, many years," Mitchell said.

The minister says people expressed a broad range of concerns and the environmental advisory council will put together a report for government based on that input.

Mitchell says a new draft act will be developed which will go back to the public again. Those meetings could begin late spring or early summer.
