Crown wants adult sentences for boys charged in death of Hannah Leflar
2 boys, 16, charged in death of Grade 11 student
The Crown says it will seek adult sentences in the case of two 16-year-old boys charged with the first-degree murder of a Regina girl.
That will mean longer sentences if the teens charged in Regina's first homicide of 2015 are convicted.
The two appeared in Regina Youth Court this morning.
They are accused of killing Hannah Leflar, a Grade 11 student at Thom Collegiate.
The boys' names can't be released under provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
Show of support
More than 30 of Leflar's friends and family members appeared at the courthouse Wednesday morning to show their support.
Court staff told some of them they were not permitted to wear their "Justice for Hannah" shirts inside the courtroom.
They were also warned against outbursts or showing pictures of Hannah.
One of the accused is due back in court via video at 9:30 a.m. on Feb. 9. The second will appear in person Feb. 5.
The Crown has applied to have both youths sentenced as adults. The defence has opposed that application.
More than 5,000 signatures have been collected on a petition asking that the boys be treated as adults.
