Andi Haswell says she was shocked to learn of the death of a 16-year-old girl, her long-time friend. Police in Regina say the teen was a victim of homicide and have a suspect in custody.

"Amazing, funny, nice, caring," Haswell, 15, told CBC News of her friend Tuesday. "Just an altogether great friend. She was always there for everybody."

Haswell said news of her friend's death came to her as a shock adding she does not know anything about the case or how the victim died.

Police said officers were sent to a home on the 400 block of Garnet Street North Monday afternoon to respond to a report of an injured or possibly dead person. They said their investigation led them to believe a 16-year-old girl was the victim of homicide. They added that a suspect in the case was taken into custody.

The identity of the girl has been confirmed and her family has been notified, but her name has not been released.

Police added the suspect is a male but provided no other details.

Haswell said a group of youths at Thom Collegiate spent part of Tuesday together talking and sharing memories of their friend.

"We were all just chit-chatting and talking about good memories," Haswell said.

"I'm going to miss her a lot," she added. "It's just hard to believe that she's gone and I'm never going to see her again."

She said she has known the girl since the two of them were in Grade 2.
