Saskatchewan

Are you kidding me? Weather office issues note on possible snow heading to Sask.

The weather office says parts of Saskatchewan may be in for snow as a weather system that is likely to produce precipitation moves into the province.

Expect rain this week and maybe snow in some areas, which should melt right away

The weather office says parts of Saskatchewan may be in for snow as a weather system that is likely to produce precipitation moves into the province.

"Rain and wind, along with the possibility of snow in some parts of southern Saskatchewan, [are possible] for first half of the week," Environment Canada said in a statement Sunday.

According to the agency, a low-pressure system is expected to develop in southeastern Montana on Monday and enter the province, in the Shaunavon area, bringing rain.

"As this system intensifies and tracks very slowly northward, precipitation and strong northerly winds will intensify over much of southern Saskatchewan Monday night and early Tuesday," the weather office said. That is expected to persist through Wednesday.

The amount of rain is forecast to be anywhere from 25 to 50 millimetres, in total, although some areas in the southwest may be hit with 50 to 75 millimetres of rain over a 36 to 48-hour period.

"Snow is likely at the higher elevations over the Cypress Hills on Tuesday with 10 to 15 cm possible," according to the statement.

The weather office added that areas in central Saskatchewan and along the Alberta border in the southwest could see rain change over to snow by Wednesday but added no significant snowfall accumulations were expected as it was likely to melt on contact with the still-warm ground.

The weather office noted that the "intensity and track of this systems is still uncertain, so timing and total amounts may change".
