No more free beer on election night: U of R Students' Union

The University of Regina Students' Union is offering a $5 food voucher instead of a free beer on election night for students that signed up for a voter reminder program.

An offer for free beer has dried up at the University of Regina.

The university's students' union was promising a free drink on election night to students that signed up for a voter reminder system.

Elections Canada says offering any sort of bribe for people to vote goes against the Elections Act.

But Devon Peters, students' union president, said the incentive it's offering is not for voting, but for participating in a reminder program.

If somebody lodges a complaint, we'll look into it.- Marie-France Kenny, Elections Canada

"We had a conversation with legal counsel to be extra sure, but we are confident that we have not broken that section of the article," he said in a text.

Peters said instead of beer, the students' union will now offer a $5 food voucher to those that sign up.

Marie-France Kenny, regional spokesperson for Elections Canada, wouldn't say whether the organization is investigating this matter or not.

"If somebody lodges a complaint, we'll look into it," Kenny said.
